Rain May Not Extinguish Wildfires

Communities in the Coastal Empire and Low Country are finally getting some much needed rain; however, it may not be enough to put out a large wildfire in Waycross. The storm system that was Tropical Storm Barry brought more than four inches of rain in some areas.

Fire officials say the rain is giving more than 1,500 firefighters and emergency workers in the Waycross area some relief. For the first time since the fires started on April 16, they were not in the field today. The rain is also cooling some hot spots, allowing firefighters to focus their attention on areas where the fire is still burning.

The two major wildfires in southeast Georgia and northern Florida have burned nearly 600,000 acres.
