It's one of the leading hospitals in cancer care, and now the Nancy N. and JC Lewis Cancer Pavilion at St. Joseph's/Candler is being rewarded for its hard work.
On Thursday, local health officials announced the cancer center will be one of three sites in the state to participate in a three-year program for the National Cancer Institutes Community Cancer Centers program.
Georgia was one of only 14 states in the country to receive this pilot program.
"It will bring advances at the NCI level. The very latest in prevention and treatment and research, right down to the community level as fast as efficiently as we can get it from the scientists to the treatment level," said Nancy Johnson, Pavilion Administrator.
Two other hospitals in Rome and Columbus, Georgia, also received the designation.
