Several high ranking members of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department joined the commissioners to celebrate the retirement of Captain Bob Merriman.
Friday was a very special day at the Chatham County commission meeting. Several high ranking members of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department joined the commissioners to celebrate the retirement of Captain Bob Merriman.
Merriman says for him it's always been about the victims. "I have done what I can, not always solving these cases, but done my damnedest to solve these cases throughout the years," said Merriman. "Been successful, there are some cases which haven't been closed to my satisfaction, some that I can recall, but to the utmost it's always been about the victim and I've always tried to serve the victims and see that justice has been done for the families."
Many families in the Coastal Empire have benefited from Merriman's relentless pursuit of justice. It was Merriman who solved the 1987 murder of Randy Kicklighter. Randy's father-in-law, Christopher Lucas and hired hit-man Edward Smith are now serving time in prison for the crime thanks to Merriman
"He was just like a rock." said Kicklighter's father Randell. "He really made me never give up hope. He was just everything to my family. He's a great man."
"He pursued it, he talked to Randell almost everyday no matter when we would call or how aggravated we were. He was always there to tell us it would be solved. He kept the file on his desk. He just went, to me, above and beyond what anybody else would do." said Kicklighter's mother Bessie.
The Kicklighter family and many other victims of violent crime have Bob Merriman to thank for putting the people who hurt them behind bars. For those families and for serving the community for 30 years, Bob Merriman is a WTOC Hometown Hero.
