It wasn't the start that Adam Wainwright or the Cardinals hoped for.
Wainwright had been St Louis' stopper, with an ERA under 3.50 after a Cards loss.
But that streak stopped Wednesday at Busch Stadium.
The former Savannah Chain star gave up 6 earned runs in just 5 innings as the Cardinals lost to the Cubs 7-1.
Wainwright did strike out 7 in the defeat. He is now 9-8 on the year.
Ted Lilly won his seventh straight decision and Cliff Floyd and Mike Fontenot both drove in two runs for the Chicago Cubs.
The win moves the Cubs within two games of NL Central-leading Milwaukee.
Alfonso Soriano had a single, double and triple for the Cubs, who've won nine of 12. Chicago's 31-15 record since June Third is the best in the major leagues over that span.
Juan Encarnacion had four singles and an RBI for the Cardinals, who are 13 games under .500.
Lilly is 11-4. He worked seven innings and gave up a run and six hits.
