Hometown Hero--Zuber Malek

Zuber Malek is this week's WTOC Hometown Hero. Zuber Malek is this week's WTOC Hometown Hero.

It didn't show up on the Doppler Max 11 radar, but yesterday there was a series of Blizzards in Tattnall County. The new owner of the Dairy Queen in Glennville served up to 1,000 of the ice cream desserts to raise money for the Backus Children's Hospital by pulling his town together for a good treat and a good cause.

The Dairy Queen might look like any other, but Thursday its owner made it the company's Blizzard capital of the world. Each year, DQ donates the proceeds from every Blizzard sold in one day to the Children's Miracle Network.

Zuber Malek bought the store just months ago but wanted his first event to be a smash. "I said if we are doing it, let's do it the right way," he said.

In advance, he convinced local businesses, schools, even Smith State Prison to buy their workers gift cards for a good cause. "They put them in employees paycheck as surprise gift and employees were excited. You see them coming on and on," said Malek.

He invited Glennville's mayor and other community leaders behind the counter to make Blizzards and recruit more hungry customers. "It makes us proud to have a merchant who's into a good cause like this" said Glennville mayor Jean Bridges.

He even bought 150 Blizzards to give away at the nearby nursing home. Last year, the previous owners made $300 dollars for Children's Miracle Network. Yesterday Malek raked in $3,500. With a brand new baby of his own, he's motivated to help a cause who helps children.

"I want to do this year after year and my goal will go up and up," he told us.

For his energy and enthusiasm to help, Zuber Malek is this week's WTOC Hometown Hero.
