Polling Precinct Recommendations

Many people in Chatham County are concerned over the changes the Board of Elections is making to polling precincts.

Earlier in the year, there were several heated public hearings at which citizens just weren't happy with what was being suggested.  Thursday, some of those concerns were addressed.

One of the biggest issues people had in the beginning was that the proper research had not been done before the discussion of merging the polling locations, but now the research has been done.

On August 7, the Board of Elections asked the Board of Registrars to perform an investigation on the remaining precincts that had not been officially adjusted yet. Staff members went into neighborhoods to see exactly how the changes would affect voters, looking at transportation, the elderly and people with disabilities.

Most in attendance on Thursday were very pleased with what they decided and say this is the way it should have been done from the beginning. Savannah City Council member Mary Osborne said, "The process is now in its correct order, the recommendations coming from the Board of Registrars to the Board of Elections. Now we will have to wait to see what they do."

These are just recommendations. They will be taken to the Board of Elections Friday morning and then the decision will be left to them.
