Hometown Heroes--Georgia Power Superheroes

The struggle for truth, justice and the United Way got a boost last week from some superhero friends of the Man of Steel.

Batman and Batgirl, Mr. Incredible and Spidey, Captain America and Wonder Woman took their super message to Chatham, Effingham, Bryan and Liberty Counties to encourage people to use the powers within them for the good of the community.

"As strong as I may seem to be, it takes more than me for the campaign," said United Way campaign chairman Bert Tenenbaum. "It takes the dedicated people of the United Way to make it happen, and it was only natural that I turn to my superhero friends."

Batman is Clarence Morgan, Effingham County's director of parks and recreation, who joined the superheroes of Georgia Power in an all-day trek across the Coastal Empire to generate enthusiasm for the 2007 campaign.

"It was for the United Way, so we said of course," said Georgia Power's Christi Ryan. "In spite of the ribbing we took from friends and family."

Friday's high temperatures were in the mid 90s that day, and you can bet your web-slinging wallet that it was hot in those costumes. But no complaints from our caped crusaders.

For doing that, for spending hours upon hours helping spread the United Way message, Clarence Morgan and the superheroes of Georgia Power are this week's Hometown Heroes.

The super heroes will appear in a special video presentation and all of them will join the Man of Steel at the campaign kickoff coming up Thursday at 11:45 at the Savannah Civic Center. It will be quite a show.
