Soldiers Remembered at Warriors Walk

The Third Infantry Division is recognizing more heroes at Warriors Walk. This morning, the Third ID dedicated ten Eastern redbud trees to fallen soldiers.

One by one, the rear detachment command sergeant major read their names as their fellow soldiers unveiled the granite markers in front of each tree.

Third ID commander Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch assured their families their loved ones' sacrifices will never be forgotten.

Raquel Scates lost her husband, Staff Sgt. William Scates, on August 11. Scates was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade Combat Team.

He and Sgt. Scott Kirkpatrick, Sgt. Andrew Lancaster and Spc. Justin Penrod all died of their injuries after insurgents set off an improvised explosive device in Arab Jabour, Iraq.

"He believed in what he was doing," said Scates. "He loved this country, and even though he didn't know everyone in this world, he was doing this for everyone."

Three hundred sixty-nine Eastern redbud trees honoring Third ID soldiers now line Warriors Walk at Fort Stewart.
