Fort Stewart Soldier Killed in Training Accident

FORT STEWART, Georgia - A Fort Stewart Soldier died of injuries received in a roll over of a Army tactical vehicle in the installation training area yesterday.

Specialist Julia A. Diaz, age 21, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 703d Brigade Support Battalion, was pronounced dead at Winn Army Community Hospital at 12:45 p.m., Thursday Sept. 27.

Four other Soldiers involved in the incident were treated at the hospital and released. The accident occurred at approximately 12 noon Thursday on road FS50 off of Georgia Highway 144 in the Fort Stewart training area. The vehicle involved was a High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV).

Specialist Diaz entered the Army from Cheyenne, Wyoming, January 2006 and arrived at her unit at Fort Stewart in August 2006. She worked as a Heavy Petroleum Vehicle Operator. The incident is currently under investigation by the Army.
