The Georgia Southern Eagles started the day 9 shots in back of Winthrop after the first two rounds of the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate golf tournament.
All Winthrop had to do was shoot even par as a team and no one could catch them... but it didn't happen. In the final round at Southbridge Golf Cub Tuesday... the Eagles blistered the course at 2-under-par... while Winthrop was 7 over.
Logan Blondell of the Eagles made birdie out of the bunker on 18.... to give the Eagles a chance. They posted a 3-round total of 8-under-par.
Kelly Manders of Winthrop chipped in for eagle on the same hole... giving him medalist honors and forcing a playoff... with both teams at 8-under after three rounds.
The eagles won the tournament on the first playoff hole... posting 1-under for the team... while Winthrop was even par. Augusta State finished third... just one shot out of the playoff. Armstrong Atlantic was 12th.
