Top Teen--Chatham County Youth Commission

The Chatham County Youth Commission are this week's WTOC Top Teens. The Chatham County Youth Commission are this week's WTOC Top Teens.

Municipal elections are less than a month away and one group of teens is helping their fellow students learn as much as they can about the candidates in their community.

They asked the tough questions and the Savannah mayoral candidates had to answer. While this may not be your typical political forum, it is one that teen Anthony Williams feels is important. "I hope the youth gains a sense who the mayoral candidates are, what they stand for and which ones they should vote for, based on their beliefs," he said.

As chairman for the Chatham County Youth Commission, Anthony and his fellow youth commissioners helped organize the mayoral forum. The group of teens asked hard hitting questions about topics raging from education and the drop out rates to poverty and crime.

"I took away the thoughts of many political leaders of Savannah and how they are going to affect us in our future, because we are the future, " said youth commissioner Lauren Cummings.

And it's that future these youth commissioners are trying to protect, allowing students to make their own informed decisions about who could serve the community best and potentially influencing other people's votes. It's just one of the many ways the Chatham County Youth Commission director Van Johnson says the group serves the Savannah community.

"They are active in leadership. Leadership through government and they do it in a variety of ways , through educational activities, through community activities, like we saw today and through social activities," said Johnson. "So these young people are very busy. they're involved and they are not only leaders of tomorrow, they are leaders of today."

For their leadership and making a difference in our community, the members of the Chatham County Youth Commission are this week's WTOC Top Teens.
