SAVANNAH, GA--Cathy Wiederhold is teaching her fifth graders at St. Peter the Apostle about the very first Thanksgiving, along with the similarities and differences we see today.
She's been teaching at this school now for 22 years and it's the same young people who make it easy for her to return to the classroom every year.
"The children," said Wiederhold. "You learn so much from them, and no matter how run down you are or the other things going on in your life, they can make a smile come to your face and keep you energetic and keep you enthused to come back."
And every year she comes back, it seems as if she has even more energy. She hardly ever sits down. "I'm always moving," said Wiederhold.
She does what she can to challenge her students to reach their full potential. "I do a lot of pen and paper," said Wiederhold. "We do art work, and we do projects and we've dissected things, but I'm still a very traditional teacher."
She may be traditional in her teaching, but her competitive spirit is not when it comes to her and her students' favorite football teams. "Yes, we have a big rivalry because I'm a Gator fan and they are Dogs fans," said Wiederhold.
So for her creative, upbeat way of presenting a lesson and for being a brave Gator fan surrounded by a classroom of Georgia Bulldogs, Cathy Wiederhold is this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
