Story Behind the Story: Attack of the Keystroke Virus

Just when you thought surfing the internet was safe, this happens: BBB Warns of Email Scam Containing Dangerous Virus.

Okay, maybe we never thought the internet was really safe, but something known as a keystroke virus is causing me all kinds of headaches and sleepless nights.

They hide in unsecured websites, scam emails and pretty much anywhere these evil minds dream up.

Of course, I'm talking about scam artists. Thieves.

That's what they are.

A keystroke virus, once on your computer, can monitor the passwords and account numbers you are typing into your machine, document it, and use them against you.

They can go after your bank accounts. They can infiltrate your secrets and personal information.

It's horrible.

The problem is, experts tell me they are among the hardest viruses to detect and get rid of.

If you are using email and you see something you don't recognize, please, please, never click on a link from any email you are not completely familiar with.

It's the only defense.

It drives me nuts we have to warn people about these things. You like to think there is such thing as security. But, there is not.

Nothing seems to be safe any more, and that is a shame.

The only thing we can do is be aware, and protect ourselves the best you can. Change passwords frequently, read everything carefully, and don't be stupid.

It's really that simple.
