ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Paul Johnson is leaving Navy to become Georgia Tech's new football coach.
According to a Navy athletic department official, Johnson informed the team of his decision during a meeting this morning.
Georgia Tech has scheduled a news conference for later this afternoon.
Johnson, a former Georgia Southern coach, also negotiated with Duke and SMU this week.
He'll replace Chan Gailey, who was fired one day after the Yellow Jackets concluded a 7-and-5 regular season with his sixth straight loss to Georgia.
Before Johnson took over at Navy, the Midshipmen had gone 1-and-20 over a span of two seasons. In his six years in Annapolis, Johnson compiled a record of 45-and-29.
Johnson has led Navy to a school record five straight bowl games. The Midshipmen play Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl on December 20th in San Diego.
