Christmas In...Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA--At this time of year, Savannah loses a little of its energy and gains a whole new style.

With SCAD out of session and tourism experiencing a rare seasonal lull, December can be the quietest month of the year here. But the calmness only enhances the spirit of the season.

Throughout downtown, it can be seen in the reds and golds that blend festively with the customary green pallet of the squares and in the glow of Broughton Street that is matched only by the feeling of warmth it brings out.

But it can also be felt in the smaller and somewhat more familiar crowds on the streets when many Savannahians rediscover their city.

"This is a time of year for family strolls through the squares,'' says Joe Marinelli, president of the Savannah Convention and Visitor's Bureau. "People say, listen, we can find a place to park, we can get into the restaurants and enjoy the city.''

They can find plenty to do, of course, with many events, including two tree lightings, a parade and a boat parade.

But the real Christmas treat in Savannah is seeing the old city in a slightly new way each year, while knowing the comfortable setting that frames the holiday will never really change much at all.
