Collard Green Farmers Give Free Vegetables

PORT WENTWORTH, GA--Have you bought your collard greens for New Year's Eve yet? Collard greens are a Southern New Year's tradition, believed to bring good luck, wealth (because of their green color, like money) and success in the coming year.

One Port Wentworth farm is helping people ring in the new year with a tradition of their own. The Promised Land Farm is giving away turnips, kale, mustard greens and rutabagas from now through New Year's Day.

Harvesting the vegetables not only clears the way for their crop of collard greens to grow, they say it's a way to give back to their customers for their support all year long.

"Ever since they started coming, they've been blessing us," said Robert Johnson, who runs the Promised Land Farm with his brother, Willie. "Now we want to bless the people and give back to them for giving to us."

The Promised Land Farm is also known for its Collard Green Festival, held the first Saturday in March. The farm is located on Montieth Road and Ferguson Road in Port Wentworth. They'll be open Saturday from 8am to 5pm, Sunday from 12pm to 5pm and Monday from 8am to 12pm. For more information, call them at 912.224.1199.
