American Red Cross Responds to Refinery Blast

The Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross:

The Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross continues to assist at the scene of the Savannah Sugar Refinery fire in Garden City. Currently we are partnering with the Salvation Army to canteen firefighters and emergency workers. We also have disaster mental health workers on the scene. "This is a tragic situation" said Robin Wingate, CEO for the Savannah Red Cross.

We have had many businesses and individuals offering to donate product to help canteen during this disaster. However at this time we are working with our community partners to address the needs generated by this fire. "We are very appreciative of the outpouring of support from the community" said Ms. Wingate. "It's inspiring to see that when a tragedy's like this occur, the community pulls together to help those affected".

At this time we have trained Red Cross disaster volunteers who are responding to the fire. They have been on the scene since last night and will continue to help until we are no longer needed. Red Cross needs volunteers to be trained and ready to respond when our community needs help. If you would like to become a Red Cross disaster volunteer and be "Red Cross Ready" when disaster strikes, call 651-5314.
