Truck Driver Saves Lives During Refinery Explosion

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - Support has been pouring in from all over the area as well as from the people who live and work in Port Wentworth.

"I seen a big explosion right behind me. The explosion was on top of that building," said and P&L Transportation truck driver James Postell.

Little did Postell know, but on Thursday evening his life would change forever.

Postell is a truck driver who hauls sugar from the Imperial Sugar Refinery to P&L Transport. He had just left the refinery five minutes before the explosion.

"First thing I thought was if an airplane crash but then I looked again and I saw five explosion then there was another one and it was looking like a mushroom," said Postell.

His first reaction was to call 911.

Then instead of thinking about his own safety he risked his life by going back into the refinery to help at least four others still inside.

"All these people I deal with on a daily basis. There are as close to my heart as my family at home," said Postell.

This was the scene outside of the refinery, but for Postell it was up close and personal starting with one of the victims he came across.

"He had blood coming out of his nose he was about to die and couldn't even stand up and I told him to think about his family so he stood back up that was the only thing that made him get up," said Postell.

Postell can only hope the people he helped are doing ok, but he has no regrets about what he did to help them.

"I'm real happy like I was here that day to try and save lives. "I will never forget this day," said Postell.
