Port Wentworth Elementary Back in Session

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - Port Wentworth Elementary School is right across the street from the sugar refinery. No one was inside the school during the explosion. School was canceled on Friday so officials could use the building as a command post.

Today it was back to school. Extra counselors came in and were on hand to talk with the students.

So far they don't know of any student who has an immediate family member among the missing, injured or dead. But counselors say it's important for all parents to talk to their children about the refinery explosion and what they are hearing on the news and from their friends.

"The worst thing you can do is push your kids away and pretend it didn't happen, because those are the kids who come in and they are confused," said school counselor Brie Beane. "Their minds have run wild and they make up worse things in their heads than what may have actually happened. So let them know you are there to talk to them."

Counselors say things were actually very normal in class today and very few students needed to talk to counselors.
