One Killed in Overnight Bloomingdale Fire

BLOOMINGDALE, GA (WTOC) - A 20-year-old woman identified as Ashley Busby died when her house caught fire early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters from Bloomingdale and Pooler responded to a house fire on Maple Street about 1:15am. They were informed that one person who was inside the home was missing. Firefighters began battling the flames and searching for the victim.

Busby died in the fire.

Bloomingdale Police Chief Thomas Gossett said, "The house was fully engulfed by the time we got someone here. The officers attempted to go inside from the front and back doors but the smoke and flames were so bad that we were unable to get into the house."

A man who was in the house said he woke up to the smell of smoke. He and three of his family members escaped without serious injuries.

Gossett said he does not suspect foul play. No word yet on where or how the fire started. State fire marshals were called in to investigate. They came from another part of the state because the fire marshals assigned to this region are tied up at the sugar refinery in Port Wentworth.

Firefighters remained at the scene for hours putting out hot spots.
