CLAXTON, GA (WTOC) - During basketball season, you'll find Laura Aziz on the sidelines coaching the Lady Tigers of Claxton High School.
And outside of the season, you'll still find her in the gym, helping students maintain a healthy lifestyle.
"I want them to have a good time," said Aziz. "I try not to sweat the little things."
Aziz has been teaching health and physical education now for about 15 years, and coaching basketball for ten years.
She says she is fortunate to be able to do what she loves on a daily basis. But while having fun, she teaches her students important life lessons as well.
"Even though I tell the kids that I'm kind of laid back, at the same time, I'm always looking to make sure that we're treating the others right," said Aziz. "That's real big for me in my class. I just really believe in doing the right thing all the time, no matter what it is."
And the right thing for Aziz as a teacher and a coach is to make sure her students know that books come before everything else.
"We love sports and we love athletics, but there is so much more to it and there is so much out there in this world today and you know it's very competitive out there," said Aziz. "I tell the kids I want them to finish what they started, but I want them to take care of those books first because that's what is going to get them through. It's the books."
So for her concern for her students' physical and mental development, Laura Aziz is this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
