Hunting Island Cabin Owners Want Beach Renourished

Hunting Island State Park Hunting Island State Park

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - Plans to renourish part of Hunting Island State Park are in the works.

Last year, heavy erosion wiped out two state cabins and put many other cabins and cottages on the state park in jeopardy. Now, state park officials are trying to save that part of the island by taking sand from the sand bar on the south end of the island and truck it to the most immediately threatened areas.

It's a measure cabin owners say needs to happen immediately.

"Our cottages are going to become house boats very quickly, and secondly, if they don't get it done before the turtle season, the turtles won't be able to nest on the south end of the island," said cabin owner Bernie Kole.

Park officials still don't have the permits or the money to do the renourishment project right now but OCRM is holding a public hearing tonight to get feedback from cabin owners and other concerned citizens about this beach renourishment project before any permits are granted.
