PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - Chief Greg Long of the Port Wentworth Fire Department said in a 1pm media briefing that the fires burning in the silos for nearly a week at the Imperial Sugar refinery have finally been put out.
Chief Long said crews faced a unique situation, with sugar burning in open silos. He gave credit to Williams Fire and Hazard Control, the specialists brought in to battle the blaze, for their expertise.
Teams put successive layers of foam on the fires, and Chief Long says by today, thermal imaging shows the temperature within the silos to be below 70 degrees.
Heavy equipment crews are now on site removing a lot of the debris in the area where searchers believe they may find the remaining missing worker.
Some of the areas at the refinery unaffected by the explosion and fire may soon be operational again, but so far we have no specifics on which areas.
Chief Long expects recovery operations to wrap up tonight.
