During the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington in March, there were several near wrecks like the ones at Daytona and Talladega. But, in this case, the drivers were able to keep their eyes open and avoid catastrophe, which prompted Fox Sports analyst Darrell Waltrip to observe, "We've seen wrecks over there that didn't happen, but should have happened."
With Eyes Wide Shut!
The super speedways on the Winston Cup Circuit seem to always bring out the multi-car pileups. Daytona and Talladega are especially susceptible to such horrific crashes that seem unavoidable. In this year's season opening Daytona 500 there was such a wreck involving 18 cars. Driver Johnny Benson was asked what he saw from his seat in the number 10 Valvoline Pontiac, "Aw, we have our eyes closed during that stuff."
