Imperial Sugar Company Statement

From Imperial Sugar:

Washington, DC - Last month, the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia, experienced a fatal fire.  Since that time, the plant has welcomed and worked closely with numerous local, state and federal agencies to investigate the cause of the event to help prevent future tragedies.  Today, following an Education and Labor Committee hearing in the House of Representatives, Imperial Sugar CEO John Sheptor commended the agencies involved in the investigation and released the following statement:

"As stated by those who testified today, there are ongoing investigations to determine the cause of this incident.

"The Port Wentworth plant had a comprehensive housekeeping program, including aspects specifically focused on dust reduction.  Dust hazards were taken very seriously at the plant.

"We have invited our elected officials and investigative organizations into our facility and into our community to pursue standards that benefit from the lessons of this tragedy.  While the investigations have yet to be concluded, it is our hope that they are derived in the same spirit shared by those of us on the site: a dedication to ascertaining both the cause of this incident, and in doing so, to helping prevent future tragedies.

"We will continue to proactively contribute what we know to accelerate what can be learned by everyone and every agency.  Our employees would expect no less from us and we are pleased to do so.

"The strength and resilience of our community and employee family have been remarkable.  They deserve the best from us in company and public leadership in how we respond to their needs and how we work together to build with them their future."
