A Savannah man was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 95 Sunday night. Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol tell us 48-year- old Michael Maguire was driving a Cadillac about 8pm and getting on the interstate, southbound at the Savannah Airport ramp. They say he lost control of the car, it spun around as it crossed the southbound lanes, and was struck by a tractor-trailer which crushed the car between the trailer and a guardrail. The car was left lying on its side against the guardrail.
The two vehicles also collided with another car. Pooler firefighters had to use the jaws of life to cut the top partially off the Cadillac in order to get Maguire out. He was airlifted to Memorial Health by Lifestar helicopter and died during emergency surgery. The truck driver and the occupants of the other car were not seriously injured. This was the only fatal accident in Chatham, Bryan, and Effingham Counties during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.
