Space faced five drug charges and his trial had been set for next month, but today he appeared before Effingham County Superior Court judge John Turner, and made plea agreement.
He pled guilty to one charge under the Georgia Controlled Substances Act dealing with his possession of the drug butalbital. He got four years probation under the First Offender's Act. Now he will go through a drug and alcohol assessment, in which he may be required to seek treatment.
While making his plea, Space also resigned as Effingham County's sheriff today. The county has already sworn in Jimmy McDuffie for the job.
McDuffie has worked 20 years for Effingham County and recently spent two years with the Rincon Police Department as a detective sergeant. He has run for sheriff in the past, but never won. He will be the new sheriff until the county holds a special election for this position.
