Thunderbolt's police chief for three years, Sam O'Dwyer, has resigned his post.
The news came yesterday afternoon after town officials learned O'Dwyer had lost his state certification, which includes his powers to arrest.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was checking accusations regarding O'Dwyer failing to follow procedures in a drug case when he served in Effingham County. He was supposed to give up his peace officer standards and training certification then. His certification was eventually revoked, and never reinstated. This week an administrative law judge upheld that revocation. Thunderbolt City Council will meet tonight to appoint an interim police chief.
