There will be a number of elections this November, but one of great interest is the recently vacated slot for Effingham County sheriff.
Today, in the first day of qualifying, two people applied: longtime Savannah police officer Kenny Porter and Chatham County sheriff deputy William Purvis.
Special election officials believe more contestants will enter the race.
"You never know," said election supervisor Frances Seckinger. "I've heard there may be five, six, including the sheriff filling the unexpired term."
Friday at noon is the deadline to qualify.
