The man accused of killing two Beaufort County deputies must undergo a mental evaluation to see if he is competent to stand trial.
Tyree Roberts is charged with killing Lance Corporal Dana Tate and Corporal Dyke Coursen back in January, as they responded to a domestic call.
Circuit judge Perry Buckner ordered the evaluation to determine if Roberts suffered from mental illness in January and whether he is mentally retarded.
The state is seeking the death penalty.
