The local option sales tax (LOST) is no longer a lost cause for Chatham County commissioners. After months of heated negotiations, the commission finally voted on a plan today.
The big argument had been, how will the jail cost be split up between the municipalities and the county? Commissioners agreed on a ten-year plan, which gives the county more than 17 percent of the tax money. Also, the cities will have to pay the county a per-day cost for each prisioner in the jail. The amount of money the county recieves and the cost per prisioner goes up in the second five years.
Now the muncipalities have to decide how to divide the rest of the money from the LOST tax between themselves.
