Fire Destroys House in Garden City

Just after 5am this morning, Garden City police were dispatched to a house on 4th Street. The first officer to arrive found the house engulfed in flames--even the power pole in front of the house was on fire.

The man who lives there tells police he was using a wood-burning stove because of the cooler temperatures and stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. He heard a popping noise and walked back in to find the house on fire.

Garden City firefighters were called out immediately and went to work, but there was little they could do but protect the home next door. There was one minor injury reported. Port Wentworth firefighters had to be called out to help fight this huge blaze.
