SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The 2018 State of the Port Address is set to take place on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Throughout recent years, business at the Port of Savannah has skyrocketed, and local, state, and federal leaders want to make sure they can accommodate all the booming business.

“Listen, the Georgia Ports is the economic engine of the Southeast, there’s no question about it, not only for Savannah or for Georgia, but the whole Southeast. That’s why this is such an important project,” said Congressman Buddy Carter, (R) Georgia.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch are both expected to speak during Thursday’s address. We expect to hear more about the Georgia Ports Authority Board of Directors recently approving $92 million for a rail expansion. The groundbreaking for the new Mason Mega Rail Project was held back in March. This project will add 97,000-square-feet of new rail, increasing the number of working tracks from eight to 18.

This expansion will allow the ports to double its rail capacity. The project should be completed by 2021.

The State of the Port Address will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.
