EMANUEL CO., GA (WTOC) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged a Toombs County man with several counts of child molestation in Emanuel County.
On Tuesday, GBI agents arrested 49-year-old John Vernon Welch on charges of six counts of child molestation and two counts of aggravated child molestation. They say on Oct. 5, 2018, the GBI was requested by the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an allegation made against Welch of sexual assault against a minor.
The investigation revealed that Welch engaged in sexual acts with multiple underage females on numerous occasions, according to the GBI.
“The GBI and the sheriff’s office are still conducting numerous interviews,” said Chief Deputy, Rocky Davis, Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office. “We still have a long way to go on this case, and building it up.”
Davis says they are still gathering evidence in the case and are asking the community for information.
“We feel like more people may come forward, and we asked that they do if there has ever been an incident involving Mr. Welch with any other people. At this point, some of the alleged victims are not minor anymore. This thing has happened over time.”
Welch was arrested and taken to the Emanuel County Jail without incident.
The sheriff’s office believes the investigation will take many weeks,
