SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -American Legion post 184 collected funds and food on Saturday to help men and women in the Coast Guard make ends meet.
Members lined up along Victory Drive with buckets and boots to collect donations from drivers.
The Coast Guard was the only branch of the military not being paid during the government shutdown, so the group stepped in to help.
They’ll send the money to Coast Guard leadership at Hunter Army Airfield who will give it to those in need.
“Whatever we need to get anybody to donate whatever they have. we’ve had people dump their ashtrays full of change," said Mary Hohnerlein, President of the American Legion. "We’ve had people pull out money clips and just throw them at us. Every little bit helps, and that’s what we’re here for.”
Along with the financial donations, the group also collected food to give to the Coast Guard.
