Summer 500 program helping Savannah students gain workforce experience

Summer 500 program underway in Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - This year’s Summer 500 program is officially underway in Savannah.

It’s a program where the City of Savannah works with local agencies to help provide jobs and skills training to local high school students.

Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach tells us the program is perfect for teens who want real workforce experience and make connections along the way.

“We’re not here to get you permanent job long term the rest of your life. We’re here to expose you to work and understand what it means, and have a good time doing it," Mayor DeLoach said. “Put something out there where the kids can get a lot out of it; businesses can get a lot out of it, so it’s worth the time for both of them to be here, and that’s my main goal since I’ve been here.”

2019 will be the fourth year of the program. Last year, more than 250 high school juniors and seniors were able to find a job through the program.
