BULLOCH COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - A rally in Statesboro could have one very famous guest this summer.

City leaders plan to invite First Lady Melania Trump to a community-wide anti-bullying event. The announcement came Tuesday morning in a City Council meeting.

Last year was the inaugural rally, and organizers say they hope that it has enough to get on the First Lady’s radar.

Two weeks ago, organizers notified city leaders of the rally planned for late July just before the start of school. They also requested a proclamation from the city. Tuesday, city leaders approved the proclamation, but also discussed inviting the First Lady because she’s an advocate against bullying. They believe her presence would help send a positive message.

“In the process, we’ve talked to the White House twice today. We’re going to follow her protocols and invite her,” said City Council member, Derek Duke.

In addition to the city’s proclamation, Bulloch County is expected to issue something similar for the same day.
