SYLVANIA, GA (WTOC) - A Sylvania company lost part of its plant early Thursday morning.
A fire burned through tons of raw materials and the building that held it.
Someone spotted the fire at Wammock’s Milling Service and called the fire department around 4 a.m. They found a loading area burning to the ground. It held the grain and pellets used to make animal feed. Fire crews say that fueled the fire even more.
Crews worked through the morning and still soaked hot spots as late as noon. Sylvania’s fire chief says fuel and the building materials made the fire harder to fight than you might think.
“It’s pretty aggravating because you’ve got the tin that fell on top of everything and it’s all burning underneath,” said Chief Shane Burke, Sylvania Fire. “So, you have to pull up the tin to get to some of the fire.”
Burke says crews were doing some repair work Wednesday afternoon, and one spark from that could have smoldered until it burned Thursday morning. A fire marshal was there looking through the damage and working to determine an exact cause.
