POOLER, GA (WTOC) - Friday is International Childhood Cancer Day.
The annual global campaign raises awareness about childhood cancer every Feb. 15.
Friday, children in one Savannah hospital got a very special surprise. A trolley filled with gifts showed up right in front of Memorial Health’s Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital.
The special gifts are being donated by the Pooler Lions Club. The club collected over 1,000 items from local businesses and the community for months - just for this special day.
“As a mom of a cancer patient here, it has been so meaningful during our journey to be the recipients of so many other peoples’ gifts; the blankets, the pillows, the slippers, the toys," said Karla Italiano.
According to the World Health Organization, each year, more than $300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer around the world.
