SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -A vacant building in the Starland District will soon have a makeover. A few other businesses have occupied the space since then but a developer is now trying to use the building for multiple businesses.

The building most recently housed a Save-a-Lot grocery store but right now it’s under construction in hopes to bring new businesses to the area. The building on Bull Street, formally known as David’s Supermarket, is said to be Savannah’s first supermarket.

In December of 2018 Save-a-Lot sold the property to developers. Since then, a team of seven have been putting a development plan together.

“I think bringing some more life and more newness to the building will help the neighborhood proceed to grow and to develop into a way the community will be proud,” said Beth Vantosh, of the Vantosh Realy Group.

The building is in the demo stage right now. Vantosh says preserving any historic architectural details is important. They already have renderings done of what the space could look like, but those could change according to what businesses are interested in coming to the space.

“Heavy food and beverage, but we are also looking for an entertainment component and we would also like a market component," Vantosh said. "Because historically, this store has been a grocery store, market for the neighborhood for the last 75, 80 years.”

The developers have also started construction on a food truck park across the street from the building. Containers are being transformed into small businesses. Vantosh says this is something new for Savannah.

“We are going to have an outside bar there with different food components there as well as outdoor parks for kids-very family friendly.”

Vantosh says there is no finish date on the food truck park right now, but it is close to completion.
