SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -On Saturday, hundreds of people will gather in front of the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion to get their rears in gear.
This the seventh year for Get Your Rear in Gear 5K, a race that raises money and awareness in the battle against colorectal cancer.
This race always proves to be particularly challenging for us at WTOC, not because of the distance, but because this event is run in memory of our dear friend and colleague Mike Manhatton.
It was five years ago that Mike lost his long battle to colorectal cancer. A disease that will be diagnosed in more than 150,000 Americans this year, a disease that will kill more than a third of those people diagnosed.
Consider This: for the five years from his initial diagnosis after a regular colonoscopy, to the day it took his life, Mike never failed to speak, preach and, if necessary, beg to make people aware of the benefits of early detection.
His passion to that cause lives on in all of his friends and loved ones and its why we’re asking you to get involved too.
So in honor of Mike and every other person this terrible cancer has affected, get your rear in gear and get a colonoscopy as soon as you turn 50.
