BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - Beaufort County Sheriff PJ Tanner hosted a meeting Tuesday to provide information about his budget needs to the county council.
The county’s finance committee requested more information after reviewing the sheriff’s budget request at their April 10 meeting. The sheriff wanted the council to understand that his office pays for many expenses for other county agencies, such as operating the 911 Center and the Emergency Management Division.
Beaufort County Councilman and Chairman of Finance, Joseph Passiment, said the meeting was a good opportunity to review how things are done now and work on ideas for the future.
“What we’re concerned about is that everybody needs to pay their fair share,” Passiment said. “The budget has been presented for the basics that we need to keep everybody in Beaufort County safe. As the sheriff said, there are some things we are doing on behalf of other entities in the county that may well be the responsibility of those individuals.”
Passiment says the council will reach out to other agencies and look for ways to share expenses in the future.
