SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah Bananas don’t do anything normal. That includes an All-Star weekend.

When the team hosts the Coastal Plain League All-Star Showdown this summer, it won’t be like anything fans have ever seen.

You could be a Banana this summer

“It’s definitely unlike anything done before, but we feel our All-Star event lends itself to creativity and trying new things," says CPL COO/Commissioner Justin Sellers. "The more we have dove into the particulars between our staff and the Bananas, the more excited we are about the CPL All-Star Showdown and we look forward to treating the players and fans to something unique.”

Among the innovations: an All-Star team made up of participants with Savannah ties.

Of the 12 teammates, up to six can be Bananas players. But the rest will be made up of community individuals selected during an open tryout at Grayson Stadium on May 28.

“Since we’ve arrived in Savannah, we’ve been asked by fans hundreds of times what it take to play for the Bananas,” says team owner Jesse Cole. “This is a chance for fans to take the field and join the Bananas to represent Team Savannah in the All-Star Showdown. We are looking for anyone who thinks they have what it takes to play ball at this level. Most importantly, we are looking for people that want to have fun and have a great story.”

Team Savannah will be just one of six All-Star teams competing that weekend. The other teams will be made up of players from the East, West, North, and South divisions, as well as a team of fan voted All-Stars.

The format of the showdown is much different as well.

Teams will compete in games lasting three innings each. They will determine seeding for the showdown in a Home Run Derby on Sunday night. The top two seeds will earn byes to Monday’s semifinals. The other four teams will compete in the quarterfinals Sunday.

“Our mission is simple: fans first, entertain always,” says Cole. “The All-Star Showdown is no different. We are always asking, how can we make the games more exciting and more fun. This format will create non-stop entertainment and action for our fans.”

Cole believes the three-inning games will create a fast paced game that fans will enjoy. The 2019 CPL All-Star Showdown takes place at historic Grayson Stadium July 7 and 8.
