SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Monday is Earth Day, an annual event created over 40 years ago. It is now recognized around the world.

In celebration of the day, students at Coastal Empire Montessori School got together with their art teacher to create a butterfly garden on campus.

The students build garden sculptures and ornaments out of re-purposed materials. The soil, mulch, and plants were all donated.

The project gives students the opportunity to learn about the migration of Monarch Butterflies. Some fly thousands of miles during the winter months to Mexico and back in the summer.

“The Monarch Butterflies will be coming from Canada to go back to Mexico, and then be able to go back and continue to fly to Mexico," said Aaralynn, 5th Grader.

The garden has been certified and registered by Monarch Watch as an official Monarch Waystation.
