TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - The Chatham County Health Department has lifted the advisory for Polk Street Beach on the north end of Tybee Island, extending to the jetties on north beach.
The advisory was issued on Monday, April 30 because the level of enterococcus bacteria found in the water was above the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended standards. High levels increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness in swimmers.
Health department officials say subsequent water samples show the bacteria levels have dropped below Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended limits. Therefore, the advisory has been lifted as of Thursday, May 2.
