BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - Seventy-five years ago, Beaufort Memorial first opened its doors.
The original hospital had just 25 beds and four doctors. Today, it’s a sprawling facility in Beaufort with almost 200 beds and more than 300 physicians. It also has medical centers across Beaufort County.
In the last year, Beaufort Memorial has announced plans for the state’s first micro hospital in Bluffton, expanded its cancer center, and will break ground on a new medical building in Okatie in June.
The President and CEO says being a county hospital and expanding this way allows them to care for more of the community.
“I think we’re here to serve the special needs of the county and community. I think as healthcare goes, it becomes sometimes corporate, and remaining an independent county hospital allows us to remember who we’re here to serve, and that’s the people of Beaufort County," said Russell Baxley, President and CEO, Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
In addition to those projects, he says hospital is planning to renovate it’s operating room next year.
