METTER, GA (WTOC) - One of the best ways for children to burn off energy is to exercise, and at Metter Elementary School, Vicki Bowen helps get her students moving.
“Everyone likes coming to the gym, and we try to make it fun,” Bowen said. “We see probably around 1,100 kids a day now that we are in our new school, in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. If you just touch one of those lives every day, you feel like you’ve earned your paycheck.”
Bowen tries to help build up confidence in the children and is one of the school’s biggest cheerleaders.
“Every kid is not the best athlete in the world. We try to find something they are good at,” she said. “I’m just very fortunate to have the people I work with, the children I work with. It’s a good day to be a Tiger when you are in Metter, GA.”
Bowen not only teaches physical education; she’s also the middle school athletic director and golf coach.
“My morning starts here around 7, and usually by the time I go from here to athletic events, represent the school, I get home about 8:30 every night,” she said.
She says those long hours pay off.
“I saw some of my past middle school golfers at our high school region golf match yesterday. They came up to me and said, ‘Ms. Vicki, we won this trophy in middle school. You helped us win it.’ That’s what makes you feel good. They still remember you when they are sophomores, juniors, seniors in high school.”
The true highlight of her day is just going to school.
“I get to see my grandkids. I have a granddaughter in daycare here, and I have a Pre-K grandson. I know first thing 7 a.m., I’m going to get to see my kids.”
Bowen also has a daughter who teaches Kindergarten at Metter Elementary. She also says she wants to give a shout out to Eric Verbal, who has been helping her teach gym class for the last 12 years.
