SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Memorial Day’s Winston Wright, Jr. is dynamic on every playing field.
His Twitter handle is @showtimejet, which fits perfectly. Now he’ll need to add Ashley Dearing Award winner to that social media bio.
The Memorial Day three-sport star was named the 66th annual Ashley Dearing Award winner Thursday. The honor is given to Savannah’s most versatile male high school athlete, as voted on by local media members and athletic directors.
“This award means everything to me,” Wright told WTOC Thursday afternoon. “The athletes that have won it before, that’s a special thing. It means a lot to me to have my name added.”
Wright, who will be heading to West Virginia to play football, was a star for the Blue Thunder and Matadors in football, basketball, and track and field. The win helps Wright make more school history.
He is the first student-athlete from Memorial Day to win the Dearing Award.
“It’s a blessing. Nobody probably thought someone from Memorial would win it,” he says. “I just hope it shows people you can go anywhere and be successful.”
Wright was plenty successful in every sport during his career at Memorial.
He was a four-time GISA All-State selection in football, a three-time all-state selection in basketball, and just won state titles in the 100m and 200m dash last weekend.
Now Wright joins an elite fraternity of Savannah athletes. Recent winners of the Dearing Award include Demetris Robertson, Brad Stewart, Calvin Turner, and Javonte Middleton. The newest winner says those were all players he admired growing up.
“The young guys always look up to the older guys,” Wright says. “So you see them get that award, you want to get it too."
