Sharks win Lower State title with miraculous comeback

May River knocks off SCHSL soccer power Bishop England to advance to title game

Sharks use miraculous comeback to advance to title game

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) - Each of the last two years, Bishop England has knocked May River out of the state playoffs.

With the game winding down, it appeared it would be three straight season ending defeats for the Sharks to the Battling Bishops.

Then Joel Fleek happened.

The Sharks junior forward scored two goals in the final three minutes to help May River stun the state powerhouse 3-2, and advance to their first ever SCHSL State Championship.

“At halftime, we talked about this game coming down to your mental strength and your mental toughness. They responded in a way that even I didn’t expect,” says May River head coach Misael Garzon. “When you’re down 2-1 to a team of that caliber with three minutes left in the game, you don’t expect a result like this. But we got it.”

With the win, the Sharks advance to the SCHSL Class 3A state championhip game against Indian Land.

Fleek’s goal to tie was a low spinner that squirted underneath the Bishops goalie. Moments later, Fleek put another one on net off the bounce.

This one was too hard for the Bishop keeper to rally, as it bounced off his hands and trickled in to give the Sharks the lead.

“I saw the ball and I just drilled it. I wasn’t worried. I just hit that thing," laughs Fleek. I don’t know. I didn’t know it was going in. I hit it. It went in the net, and I went wild.”
