Area athletes highlight Day 1 of GHSA state track meet

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The first day of the GHSA state track and field championships is in the books in Rome, Carrollton, and Albany.

Regardless of the site, Savannah-area athletes had some good showings on Thursday.

Calvary’s Jasmine Akins, Richmond Hill’s Kayla Gholar, and Liberty County’s Leia Williams all claimed state titles. Several other athletes found their way to the podium as well.

SAVANNAH-AREA PLACERS

Sam Brown (New Hampstead)- 2nd place- Class AAAAA boys’ long jump

Kayla Gholar (Richmond Hill)- State Champion- Class AAAAAA girls’ 1600m run

Jasmine Akins (Calvary Day)- State Champion- Class A-Private triple jump

Matthew Burnham (Effingham County)- 2nd place- Class AAAAAA boys’ pole vault

Liam McDonald (Effingham County)- 4th place- Class AAAAAA boys’ pole vault

Jania Joseph (Statesboro)- 2nd place- Class AAAAA girls’ high jump

Stephen Kraeling (South Effingham)- 4th place- Class AAAAA boys’ high jump

Talaya Robinson (Claxton)- tied for 2nd place- Class A-Public girls’ high jump

Leia Williams (Liberty County)- State Champion- Class AAA discus
